The Negroni Story: Florence, the Americano and a Classic

The Negroni has a simple structure and a distinctive character: gin, Campari and sweet red vermouth, served over ice with orange. Its story centres on a small change to another Italian cocktail, the Americano.

The Florence story

The best-known account places the drink's origin in Florence in 1919. Count Camillo Negroni is said to have asked bartender Fosco Scarselli at Caffè Casoni for a stronger version of his usual Americano. Gin took the place of soda water, and orange replaced the lemon garnish.

This is the origin story told by Campari. It is useful to distinguish that familiar account from a claim that every detail of the cocktail's early history is beyond dispute. The connection between the Americano and the Negroni is easy to understand: replacing soda with gin changes the structure while retaining Campari and sweet red vermouth.

Three ingredients, a clear identity

The classic recipe uses equal parts of the three ingredients. The International Bartenders Association lists 30 ml each of gin, Campari and sweet red vermouth, stirred in an ice-filled rocks glass and garnished with half an orange slice.

Campari contributes pronounced bitterness, vermouth adds sweetness and herbal aromas, and gin supplies its botanical character. The result is spirit-forward and bittersweet.

The short ingredient list also makes the recipe easy to recognise. Different gins and vermouths can change its balance without changing that basic structure. For the method and related drinks, see our guide to the classic Negroni and five variations.

Why it inspires Cocktailored

When we brought cocktail references into clothing, the Negroni was a natural inspiration. Its name can recall a favourite bar, a shared dinner or the order your friends already know. That personal connection is what we carry into the designs.
